BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — The program “Code Gratitude” is expanding to the Bangor area.

The website,, shows first responders, veterans and active military members businesses in the area that offer discounts on services for them. The money collected from the ads goes towards scholarships for Maine students looking to join the emergency responder field.

Code Gratitude founder Shannon Moss came up with the idea a couple years ago. Her husband is a police officer and they were finding more and more businesses that offered discounts that they weren’t aware of.

“I thought, ‘How come we don’t know about these?’ and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if there was one site that could feature all of these businesses?’ So that was how Code Gratitude started,” Moss said.

Businesses pay an annual fee of $250 to have their ad on the website. It creates foot traffic for the business while they show their gratitude towards first responders, military members and veterans.

“It’s all about a way for them to give a nod of appreciation, a thank you to our protectors,” Moss said. “They work long hours, holidays, time away from their families, and this is just a simple way for businesses to show their appreciation to these wonderful groups of people.”

Ten percent of each ad sale gets put into the “Code Gratitude Scholarship Fund.” Those scholarships help Maine high school students pursue a career as a first responder. To learn more about the program.
